It’s been all over the news lately that Dr. Oz admitted to the Senators that the diet drugs he promotes are not based on facts.
Here is the original scoop from buzzfeed.
TV doctor Mehmet Oz, host of the popular syndicated program The Dr. Oz Show, took a lot of heat while testifying before a Senate committee Tuesday about his claims that some diet products are “miracles” for weight loss. In one exchange lasting ten minutes, Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill accused Oz of deliberately lying.
From McCaskill’s press release on the hearing:
McCaskill’s hearing follows recent enforcement actions against companies engaged in deceptive advertising of weight-loss products. Last month the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced that it is suing the Florida-based company, Pure Green Coffee, alleging that it capitalized on the green coffee bean diet fad by using bogus weight-loss claims and fake news websites to market its dietary supplement. The FTC claimed that weeks after green coffee was promoted on the Dr. Oz Show, Pure Green Coffee began selling their Pure Green Coffee extract, charging $50 for a one-month supply.
Oz many times acknowledged products he told viewers to use are not scientifically supported and don’t have the research to be presented as fact.
“I don’t get why you need to say this stuff because you know it’s not true,” McCaskill said to Oz of his praise for green coffee extract, raspberry ketone, and garcinia cambogia as weight loss products.Oz said he disagreed with whether the products worked or not, but acknowledges they wouldn’t pass “FDA muster” as a pharmaceutical drugs.
Later Oz would acknowledge many of the products he mentioned “don’t have the scientific muster to present as fact” but “nevertheless” he gives his audience advice to use the products.
“I actually do personally believe in the items I talk about on the show,” Oz said. “I passionately study them. I recognize they don’t have the scientific muster to present as fact but nevertheless I would give my audience the advice I give my family all the time and I have given my family these products. Specifically the ones you mentioned, then I’m comfortable with that part.
“The scientific community is almost monolithically against you in terms of the efficacy of the three products you called miracles,” McCaskill shot back at Oz.
Oz then told McCaskill it was his “job” to be a “cheerleader for the audience” in defending his his advice to use so-called “miracle” products.
“My job, I feel on the show, is to be a cheerleader for the audience. And when they don’t think they have hope, when they don’t think they can make it happen, I want to look everywhere including alternative healing traditions for any evidence that might be supported to them.”
“I know you feel you’re a victim,” McCaskill said to Oz. “Sometimes, conduct invites being a victim, and I think if you would be more careful maybe you wouldn’t be victimized quite as much.”
In my opinion, I have witnessed a lot of individuals that have taken supplements and have seen major differences in their weight loss. Does the FDA really need to regulate everything? Are they ALWAYS right? What if the only thing that people need is “hope”? And what if supplements / diet drugs is one thing that can get a person going? I’m a big believer in taking these “diet drugs” myself and have noticed a change in my lifestyle as well as others. I’ve seen people all over on my Facebook newsfeed that have taken before and after pictures by following a specific program and could have not done it without the help of these “diet drugs”.
I just hope for the best for Dr. Oz, because at the end of the day I think he’s given a lot of “hope” for a lot of lives.
I remember when I was at LA Fitness, I’d see a group of men enter the gym and everyone would stop what they were doing and stare at one of the guys. I didn’t understand what was so special about that one specific guy except that his biceps were the size of my head. I was curious so I had to ask my workout partner who that guy was and he told me that his name was CT Fletcher.
He kept telling me that he was some famous body builder and what not; so I decided to take a picture with him. He was a really nice and super humble dude.
Anyways as soon as I got home from the gym I decided to go on the internet and research more on CT Fletcher. I found a couple of YouTube videos that were intriguing.
I found out that this guy was a big inspiration for people that were into lifting weights. Just learning about his history, and his encouraging speech made me want to work harder at the gym. I found his videos to be not only motivating but entertaining as well. His videos made me laugh because he would cuss a lot while he was working out. I guess that’s his way to push himself to do another rep while lifting weights.
I was glad that I was able to meet him. For a guy that’s probably in his 50′s and looks greater than ever was motivating. I have no excuses, especially if I’m close to 3x younger than CT Fletcher.
Nekter Juice Cleanse – My Experience
Just recently I completed a 1-day detox known as the Nekter Juice cleanse. My girlfriend’s best friend tried it and told me that she felt a major difference; in particular, she felt “lighter.” I’ve been telling myself that I’m due for a cleanse especially with all the bad toxins that I’ve injected in my body. So I decided to give a 1-day detox a try and placed my order online.
My cleanse was ready within less than a week, and all I had to do was pick it up at the nearest location which happens to be in Long Beach in my case. I’ve never been to the actual store so seeing it for the first time was a cool experience. The employees there were pretty nice, and you could tell that the store had some type of “enlighten” feel to it and that it’s all about living a “healthy” lifestyle.
Anyways, the cashier gave me a thermal bag with all 6 bottles of juice, including instructions. I also requested an extra bottle of protein since I’ve been working out.
Based on the size of the bottle, I knew this was already going to be a challenge for me especially since I have a pretty big stomach. Since I picked up the my Nekter Juice cleanse at the middle of the day, I decided that I would start the next day so I can have a complete day to do the detox.
One drawback is that each specific drink didn’t have a specific name. Every bottle was labeled as a number and the type of ingredients in that specific drink.
Well, the first drink of the day was filled with vegetables in particular kale and spinach. I didn’t really enjoy the drink but I guess it was the best way to start my day, a bottle filled with antioxidants. However, as I kept drinking my first bottle I began to gain an acquired taste and I ended up downing the bottle like nothing.
After 2 hours, I decided to take my second drink which was around 12 in the afternoon. So far, the first drink was easy and I wasn’t craving anything nor did I felt hungry whatsoever. The second one had a unique taste to it since it was coconut water, along with cucumber and and pineapple. I took my sweet time drinking this one since I was kind of getting hungry. I knew that if I were to down this bottle, I wouldn’t be able to wait another two hours for drink number 3. The bright side is that I wasn’t hungry at all and it was already around 12 PM.
I started juice #3 at around 2 PM. This drink was very similar to the first one. In other words, nothing but greens. I was already getting tired of tasting the same thing at this point, but I knew I had no choice. I was getting a little hungry, and so I have to admit I had some almonds, which I heard was ok for me to do during this cleanse. I also drank a lot of water in-between the juices. In other words, I was in the restroom majority of the day at work. The exciting thing is that I knew I was already half way through with the cleanse.
For some reason I wasn’t craving anything, and to be honest, I felt pretty full. The next drink was finally something “different.” It was the skinny lemonade which had a little bit of sweetness to it and a small kick of spiciness. This was probably my favorite drink since I’m not really big on green vegetables. This drink felt extremely light compared to the first three drinks, so after finishing this drink I got a little hungry.
I actually ordered an extra bottle of protein (usually the 1 day detox only comes with 6 drinks), since I workout a lot. The drink was a little too heavy, and it just felt like I was drinking cement. Obviously I never drank cement in my life, but that’s how it felt like and I for sure don’t plan on drinking/ordering a protein bottle from Nekter again. This was a tough one for me because I ended up being at a restaurant for my friends birthday, and I was there watching everyone drink their favorite beer and eat their favorite dish. It was torture for me that’s for sure.
Another green drink, but this time it was a little sour because it had some apples in it. At this point, I achieved an acquired taste with all the juices. It didn’t taste “different” or “weird” to me. . I didn’t care any more and I just wanted to get over this detox. I gulped this drink as fast as I could since I knew I had one final drink to go. This was around 7 or 8 PM.
The final drink! This drink was filled with vanilla beans which I’m assuming was the victory or reward type of drink for me to enjoy. The drink was actually pretty good, and I felt like I was victorious while I was gulping down my final bottle. I was at my friends house watching movies at around 10 PM (which is when I had the final drink), so I was occupied to a point where I wasn’t craving anything. I enjoyed this drink but again, the 4th drink (skinny lemonade) was my favorite.
The VERDICT – Nekter Juice Cleanse
I ended up not feeling any better or worse after drinking all 7 bottles. Sure, I probably lost my cravings for the day or so but I didn’t feel any lighter. In particular I bought this detox to perhaps help me with my irritable bowel syndrome, but that didn’t solve anything. At the same time, if I were to do a detox I’d need to go for more than just one day. I honestly don’t think anyone could feel a difference based off of a one day detox. Unless I’m mistaken, then I hope someone can prove me wrong.
In addition, as I drank each bottle, I started to think that I could probably save a lot more money if I had my own juicer and if I bought my own fruits and vegetables. The detox was a little bit pricey; and I just felt like I could have just done this on my own. You could check the prices and options on their website by clicking here.
All in all, it was a cool experience but again I would just save my money and probably do a detox more than just a day!
